Book Recap: Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon

Cover Inspection:
The book cover is the one thing I loved
about this book.

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):
Their love was meant to be.
When Megan Rosenberg moves to Ireland, everything in her life seems to fall into place. After growing up in America, she's surprised to find herself feeling at home in her new school. She connects with a group of friends, and she is instantly drawn to darkly handsome Adam DeRís.
But Megan is about to discover that her feelings for Adam are tied to a fate that was sealed long ago—and that the passion and power that brought them together could be their ultimate destruction.

LOCATION/SETTING:
Modern day Ireland.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
The main character is Megan. Megan's mother died, and so she lives with her father. They're from Boston, but her father got a job in Ireland. So, they moved there. Megan has a scar on her neck which means that she is marked, and can control the air element.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
Megan is the new girl. She immediately catches the attention of the handsome handsome Adam DeRís. At first, Adam tries to avoid Megan, until he can't anymore. There is this inexplicable pull that brings the two of them together. Then Megan finds out what makes Adam and his family different. It appears that Adam and his siblings are Marked, and that they can control elements. In addition, Megan learned that she is marked too, and that this is the reason why she is so drawn to Adam. But it is said that two marked ones cannot be together as it may bring danger to all.

LOVE:
It's common knowledge that there are four elements, and the thing I liked about the book is how the author played with the idea of a fifth element. That's the one thing I did not expect from this book.

NO LOVE:
Gosh. I hate what I'm about to do. Anyway, I didn't like how the book started. It was eerily similar to Twilight. I wanted to cry. New girl in town. Boy instantly and inexplicably attracted to Girl. Boy avoids Girl for their safety. Boy saves girl. Boy cannot avoid girl anymore. Boy and Girl kiss. Girl meets Boy's family. Blah blah blah! I mean, come on! The whole time I was reading (at least for the first half of the book), I wanted to throw the book away thinking it's just a waste of time. Also, Megan and Adam's relationship in this book is so unrealistic. One minute, Adam's avoiding Megan. Then BAM! out of the blue, they're already kissing. Two pages thereafter, they're professing undying love. There is no getting to know you stage.

FAVORITE CHARACTER:
I'm sorry. I do not have a favorite character in this book.

FAVORITE LINE:
“Have I told you today how amazing you are?” he breathed.
“Let me see now.” I did some fake pondering. “You know what? I don’t think you have.”
“Well, let me show you how amazing you are, then.”
MUSINGS:
I do not want Twilight to be the basis for any YA book. But the similarities between this book and Twilight is scary. I tried to ignore at first (I really, really tried), but I just wasn't successful. I expected more from this book. The first half was a complete disappointment. I forced myself to get over the similarities with that book about sparkly vamps. Good thing I did. The second half was so much better. There were still some overly cheesy lines that made me cringe from time to time, but it gets better. People who love cheesy romance would like it, I think. There are better books out there. But if you really want to read it, go ahead. Maybe it's your kind of book, but it's just not my cup of tea.
