Author Interview: Julieanne Lynch, author of In The Shadows

The Fairytale Nerd is the next stop on the In The Shadows Blog Tour!

Check out my interview with author Julieanne Lynch!

I am pleased to welcome Julieanne Lynch here at The Fairytale Nerd! Julieanne is here to talk about her latest novel In The Shadows.

Fiery Librian Julieanne Lynch is an author of urban fantasy books for both adults and teens. Originally from Northern Ireland, Julieanne now lives in Ireland, where she works on her Shadows Trilogy and other series full-time. Before becoming a writer, she considered a few different career paths, a rock star being one of them. She studied English Literature and Creative Writing at The Open University, and considered journalism as a career path. However, she decided writing was the way for her and believes all of her education and reading prepared her for it.
An avid reader, Julieanne has always had an encompassing fascination with folklore. When not writing, she enjoys crime series such as Criminal Minds, CSI, NCIS and Cold Case, and loves anything with Vampires, listening to metal, meeting new people, drinking lots of green tea, and sharing her dreams with her children. She is a self-professed goth wanna-be,and is happy when left to write into the early hours of the morning.
I have read and reviewed In The Shadows, and I can say that it's one of the edgiest and boldest YA books ever. You can read my review HERE.

Welcome to The Fairytale Nerd! how are you today?
I am good thank you, it is great to be here.

Scenario: Alex is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for him to throw out? What is hard for him to part with? Why?
Alex is very materialistic, so any of last seasons trends will definitely be gotten rid off, making room for all the newest trends and gadgets. But there are a few items that he refuses to get rid off: some snap shots of him and Giselle (there was a time she meant a lot to him), the pocket watch given to him by his father and the framed photo of his dead mother.

Antoine intrigues me. He's one of those characters that can be annoying and charming at the same time. Tell me what makes him laugh out loud. Where does he go when he's angry?
Antoine likes vulgarity. Anything that can turn his head and get his attention certainly makes him chuckle. He loves seeing people fall hard, and at times gets a kick out of seeing humans fail and commit acts of indecency. He finds the human moral high ground extremely amusing and often mocks them; considering they do such bad things themselves.

When he gets angry and frustrated he tends to disappear to Aurelius, a place of calm where he can be himself and express his anger without the fear if killing or hurting anyone close to him.

What is the message (from your books) that you want to convey to your readers?
I want my readers to think about how our lives can be changed very quickly and dramatically. No matter how we try to control a situation, we alone cannot change what will or has happened. We do not have the power to control destiny, but we do have the power to change how we deal with it. We can overcome anything, as long as we have faith in ourselves and trust the choices we make. Life is fickle and at times can be a very cruel game. It is how we as individuals deal with it.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Seeing my children grow into happy, healthy and grounded adults, living a long, happy and healthy life with my husband, and having a successful career.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Piety! Why? Because I feel that in today’s society (one that is considered multi-cultural) there is a vast majority of different faiths and religions that often condemn people for their choices and lifestyles. Whilst I am a Christian, and have my own views on life, I would never consider lecturing someone over drinking or swearing.

I admire anyone who has deep religious convictions, but not to the point where I have to hear a lecture every time I do something that offends their delicate simplicities or hardened values.

Give me three of your favorite books.
Great Expectations
The Colour Purple
Salem’s Lot

What is your greatest extravagance?
My book collection! Seriously. I have spent a fortune over the past fifteen years on books and have collected a collection of works by specific authors. Everything is placed in chronological order and in my very expensive hand-made Mexican pine bookcase.

Who is your hero in real life? What about in books?
My husband, because not only has he served in the Royal Navy as a bomb disposal expert, he has also been my saviour whenever life has got me down. He has proven to me so many times over the past sixteen years how much he values and loves me, and whilst I am a difficult person to live with, he never gives up on me. To me he will always be my hero.

In books, wow, there are many. Roland Deschain of Gilead from Stephen King’s: The Dark Tower series, Celie in The Colour Purple, Alex Cross from James Patterson’s Alex Cross series, and Catherine Morland in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey.

Choose: the man who loves you or the man you love?
The man I love.

Hugs or kisses? (not the chocolates)
Hugs.

Super strength or super intelligence?
Super intelligence.

Viral epidemic or nuclear explosion?
Viral epidemic.

Boxers or briefs?
Boxers.

Vampires or shifters?
Vampires.

What's your next project?
The publication of Walking With Shadows - the second book in the Shadows trilogy, and my adult novel ,Ice Goddess should have its debut in early 2012.
