[Day Nineteen of 31 Days] Author Interview: Julia Crane, author of Coexist

Hi guys! Today, Julia Crane, author of Coexist, is visiting The Fairytale Nerd for an author interview.

Julia has believed in magical creatures since the day her grandmother first told her an Irish tale. Growing up her mother greatly encouraged reading and using your imagination. Although she’s spent most of her life on the US east coast, she currently lives in Dubai with her husband and three children. She has a bachelors degree in criminal justice. (from her blog)

The Fairytale Nerd: Welcome to The Fairytale Nerd Julia! So, for the first question, what would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Julia: Well, I don't know if I would call it interesting...When I am writing if I get stuck on scene I get up and walk in cirlcles around my house which usually helps. If I'm still stuck I go outside for a long walk to let my mind wander.

The Fairytale Nerd: Who is your favorite fictional hero?
Julia: I had to think about this one for a while. I have to go with Nancy Drew as my favorite heroine. Nancy Drew started my lifelong love of books. She's smart, beautiful, and loyal. She made you believe anything was possible. I secretely wanted to be a private detective growing up and follow in her footsteps.

The Fairytale Nerd: Give me three of your all time favorite authors.
Julia: Ayn Rand, Ken Follett, and John Sandford. I love many others as well.

The Fairytale Nerd: What is the worst thing about being a writer? What is the best?
Julia: I think the worst is the emotional roller coaster. Writing is very private thing for me, and to have it out there for the world to see is not an easy thing to do. A bad review leaves you questioning your talent, and a good review can leave you smiling for days. It seems there is a constant up and down. The best thing is hearing from readers—that makes me very happy.

The Fairytale Nerd: Choose: the one who loves you or the one you love?
Julia: Well, I would have to go with the one who loves me. Being with someone who loves you makes you feel special. Of course, in an ideal world you would have both.

The Fairytale Nerd: Choose: vampires or shifters. Why?
Julia: Shifters, because I have shifters in The Keegan's Chronicles and they play an important role, especially in Book 2. I think it would be neat to turn into another form. Besides, Vampires have to drink blood. I can't even eat a steak unless it's well done. I think I'd have a hard time with the blood issue.

The Fairytale Nerd: What is the message (from your books) that you want to convey to your readers?
Julia: I do have subtle messages in Coexist, however I really want readers to just enjoy the story and take from it what they connect with. The most obvious would be sometimes what we're taught is not always correct.

The Fairytale Nerd: Who is the character you've had the most fun writing about?
Julia: I enjoyed all the characters, but I would have to pick Rourk. I've always had a thing for strong male characters. I would have had a crush on him as a teen.

The Fairytale Nerd: What is on Keegan’s bedside table right now? On her bedroom floor? In her trash can?
Her ipad, camera, and phone are always close by. Keegan is a mess, so clothes cover her floor. Her trash can, if you can find it, is probably empty.

The Fairytale Nerd: What makes Rourk laugh out loud?
Rourk is quite serious so it's not often you get the pleasure of hearing his laugh. However, he is so intrigued by Keegan that she has the ability to make him break into an easy smile and a quick laugh.

The Fairytale Nerd: By the way, how do you pronounce his name? I'm really sorry for that, but I just have to know.
Julia: Like the name "York", but with an R instead of a "Y". A hard K at the end.

The Fairytale Nerd: Thank you so much for your time, Julia!

Coexist
by Julia Crane
Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends-she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen. Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophesy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

Awesome book! It was pretty much stuck in my hand the whole time I was reading it. I love Rourk's character a lot. He is very loyal and strong which is a great combo for a guy. I enjoyed reading it immensely!
