Author Interview + Paperback Giveaway: Nathalie Mallet, author of The Princes of the Golden Cage

Nathalie Mallet, author of The Princes of the Golden Cage is visiting The Fairytale Nerd for an author interview and a giveaway!

Nathalie is giving away TWO PAPERBACK COPIES of her book + SWAG! Plus, an eBook will be given to one lucky commenter. So comment on this post now! Both giveaways are INTERNATIONAL.

Passionate about literature—especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror—Nathalie Mallet had dreamed of being a writer since her youth. When to take the plunge into this new career was just a question of timing. So when she left her New Brunswick home near the ocean for the scenic town of Kitimat, British Columbia, where the mountains touch the Pacific (and bears sometime sleep under your patio), Nathalie knew the time was right. She began writing.
Nathalie now lives in Prince George, B.C. with her husband, Andre, and an elderly ball of fluff named Honey.

Hi! Welcome to the Fairytale Nerd! So, how are you today?
Very well! Thank you for having me over.

Tell me about your book.
With pleasure! The Digging Crew is a YA dystopian/science-fiction adventure. The action is set in the turbulent world of the Dominion, where the law sees few differences between murder and shoplifting as it punishes all crimes identically. A fact 15-year-old Sammy remembers only after she’s caught stealing. So when she’s shipped to the women’s prison-mine of a faraway desert world to serve a long sentence of hard labor, Sammy expects misery, pain and ultimately death; but instead she finds the unexpected—a new family…and freedom.

What is the best thing about being a writer? The worst?
The best part about being a writer is the creative process. I do feel a great deal of excitement every time I start writing a new story. I get a thrill out of inventing characters, creating worlds, setting rules and figuring out how everything fits together. The figuring out part is the best one…to me it is. The worst part is that writing is a lonely business, and it’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster too. So, it can be tough at time.

In your opinion, what is the most overrated virtue?
Temperance, because if you are moderate in all things you cannot be passionate about anything…how boring is that!

If you were given the power to be invisible, what is the first thing you would do?
I would pull down the pants of corrupt politicians.

Who is your real life hero? How about in books?
My Parents are my real life heroes. They are loving, supportive, hardworking and the best role models one can wish for. They taught me to believe in myself and persevere. In books, Sherlock Holmes is my favorite. I admire his intelligence and enjoy his quirks.

Name three of your favorite fictional characters.
Sherlock Holmes, D’Artagnan and Harry Potter.

Hugs or kisses?
Kisses, lots of them!

Summer or winter?
Winter. I love the snow…and, well, I’m Canadian.

Boxers or briefs?
Neither…enough said. :-/

All or nothing?
All.

Math or science?
Science, of course.

The man who loves you or the man you love?
Ouch, that’s a tricky one. I’ll have to say the man who loves me.

Viral epidemic or nuclear explosion?
Viral epidemic, because I’m just coming off of the flu.

What is your next project?
I presently have a few projects on the go: two urban fantasies—one is in mid-writing and the other is under study at a publisher—and a humorous science fiction.

The Princes of the Golden Cage
by Nathalie Mallet

Prince Amir lives in a lavish and beautiful cage. He lives in a palace with hundreds of his brothers, all barred by law from ever leaving the palace until he, or one of his brothers, becomes the next Sultan. Living under constant threat of death at the hands of his scheming brothers, Amir has chosen a life of solitude and study. His scholarly and alchemical pursuits bring him under suspicion when his brothers begin to die from seemingly supernatural means. Amir finds himself thrown together with his brother Erik, the son of a barbarian princess. Together they must discover the dark secret that is stalking the halls of their golden cage.
