Book Recap: Destiny's Fire by Trisha Wolfe (ARC)

Cover Inspection:
This new cover is a very big improvement
from the original one.
However, there is still that weird goggles on the head.

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):
It’s the year 2040, and sixteen-year-old Dez Harkly is one of the last of her kind—part of a nearly extinct race of shape-shifters descended from guardians to the Egyptian pharaohs. Her home and her secret are threatened when the Council lowers the barrier, allowing the enemy race to enter the Shythe haven.
As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, but she fears the change her birthday will bring. When Dez’s newfound power rockets out of control, it’s a Narcolym who could change her fate… if she can trust him.
Dez’s guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.

SETTING:
Haven Falls.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
Dez is the main character. She is a sixteen year old Kythan, descendant of the guardians of Egyptian pharaohs. She's basically a child of the breeding experiment that was suddenly shut down for some reason. Her father was a Narcolym, and her mother is a Shythe. (The two are enemies.) Upon reaching seventeen, she will gain full power. She has violet eyes, which means that she doesn't know which power (good or bad) she will actually possess upon gaining full power.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
The Shythe governing council allowed the Narcolym, the enemy race to enter their haven. For this reason, Dez and her friends started entertaining rebellious thoughts, and even started training for battle. Dez's little rebellious group is being trained by Jace, Dez's bestfriend whom she is starting to have feelings for. But then she meets Reese, and found out that they have something in common, and eventually, they fall in love. But there are bigger things happening. The council is keeping secrets, and forces the young ones to mate with the enemy saying that it is necessary for their survival.

LOVE:
Wow. The book is full of unexpected kisses. It starts with a bang with a necking scene with two different boys. I can't help but love the make out scenes in this book. So sensual and romantic. It's actually the thing that stood out for me. Those were some of the hottest make out scenes in the history of young adult fiction. The action scene near the end of the book was also amazingly detailed. It's actually like watching a movie. I love how everything was described. There is also no question about its originality. The plot is COMPLETELY ORIGINAL. This is the first descendants of Egyptian Pharaoh slash shape-shifting guardians book I have read. Truly, there is nothing like it.

NO LOVE:
This is one of those books where I don't really know what is going on at first. I was confused, and I had a hard time getting into the story. Honestly, I almost set the book aside. I am also kind of annoyed by the main character and most especially with one of the love interests in the book. Dez made some pretty crappy decisions. I actually hated her as I went on with the story. She doesn't know what she wants. She toys with the feelings of people. She uses people. I especially hated the scene where Dez kissed Jace in front of Reese after making things official with Reese. Slutty move. Moving on, Jace confused me. Sometimes he's nice, sometimes he's not. He annoyed me, but somehow, I feel bad for him. He was always set aside, and Dez is just using him to make Reese jealous. However, I did like him at the end of the book. There is also no question that there is a love triangle in the story, but it is pretty obvious from the beginning that who Dez will choose. Very typical love triangle.

FAVORITE CHARACTER:
Reese. Handsome. Hotness personified. His make out scenes with Dez will make any girl feel tingly all over. Despite his bad boy persona, hes still very much a gentleman and treats Dez with respect.

FAVORITE LINE:
“Don't fight it,” he breathed into my ear. “Just fall to the floor, Dez.”
I attempted shaking my head defiantly, but the movement only helped his arm squeeze tighter. Panic—squirming in my stomach like electric eels—enveloped me. The walls around me blurred.Get a grip, Dez. And then I did—right on the sleeve of his leather jerkin. I pulled it over his head and blinded him.
“I just knew you wanted to rip my clothes off,” he mocked, struggling to right his jacket.
MUSINGS:
The writing not perfect, but pretty easy to read. There were details that were scattered all over. They were inserted in the most unexpected of places, and so it was kind of hard to follow and grasp. I also wish there was more explanation as to the purpose of the guardians. I wanted more history and background as I think that it would help the reader understand better as to what the guardians really are. I was satisfied with the ending. There were still a lot of unanswered questions, but I think it will all be addressed in the sequel. All in all, it is a good debut novel; the writer created a fantasy world that is full of action and... ahem... romance. (And by romance, I mean hot make out scenes.)

SIMILAR READS:
Like I said, this book is completely original as to its plot. But the action elements may be likened to most of the dystopian books nowadays, such as Divergent by Veronica Roth and Legend by Marie Lu.
