Book Recap: Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Cover Inspection:

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

LOCATION/SETTING:
This story took place before Obsidian.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
The main characters are Dawson and Bethany. Dawson is a funny, happy-go-lucky guy. He's hot, obviously, but he's a people person compare to his twin. Bethany, on the other hand, is a painter. She's a bit timid. You can say that she's mellow and even tempered.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
This is a prequel, and the things that occurred here happened before Obsidian. (Daemon still doesn't know Katy.) Bethany is the new girl in town, and she instantly caught the eye of Dawson Black! This is Dawson and Bethany's love story.

LOVE:
I adore ALL of Jennifer Armentrout's characters. Her characters are never flat. At the end of the book, you will be so familiar with each of the characters - their thoughts, habits, and emotions - that you can call them your best friends.

The romance between Dawson and Bethany. *sigh* In Obsidian, Daemon and Katy's relationship (or non-relationship) can be described as sexy and smoldering. In this book, Dawson and Bethany's relationship is swoony and sticky sweet. I was all "ooohh," "aaaahhhhh" and "awwwww."

  • Swoony moment example #1:
Talking on the phone until both Dawson and Bethany fall asleep
  • Swoony moment example #2:
Dawson kissing Bethany's palm

Which brings me to my...

FAVORITE CHARACTER:
Dawson Black.

*swoon*

So basically, Dawson is a romantic. He dethroned Romeo! He's gentle and treats Bethany like a princess. Dawson is the complete and total opposite of Daemon. He is the prince charming that all girls are after (in a hot and handsome alien packaging of course!). He feels and he loves, and he fights for that love.

NO LOVE:
Me: Waah! That's it?! It's short.
You: It's a novella! It's supposed to be short.
Me: Still. I want more! NEED more. Hot. Aliens.

FAVORITE LINE:
“I’m thinking,” he said, voice rough.
“About…?”
“You. Me. Together. Like going out together, being together.” There was a pause, and then he laughed. “Wow. That was probably the lamest attempt ever of asking you to be my girlfriend.”
Beth’s heart sped up. Lame or not, she was seconds from swooning. “You want to be my boyfriend?” He nodded, and her breath came out in a little gasp. “Well, you kind of have to be with me now.” Lifting her head, she grinned up at him. “I know your big, bad secret.”
Dawson laughed, and his eyes lightened. “Oh, blackmail, huh?”
MUSINGS:
This novella is written in the third person. It is in the POVs of Dawson, Bethany, and Daemon. While there are some action scenes, this is really more of a romance novella as it focused primarily on Dawson and Bethany's relationship. Also, in this book, the reader will get to know the protective side of Daemon. I just love how much he truly cares for his family. He is clearly the leader and the protector.

Oh yeah... there was a scene where Daemon was in boxers...
