[Friendly Fire Blog Tour] An Excerpt + Giveaway: Friendly Fire by Lynn Seresin

Before anything else, I would like to greet all of you
Happy Friday the 13th!
:P

Lynn Seresin stops by my blog to share with us an excerpt from her latest book Friendly Fire!
I’m Lynn Seresin—mother of two teens, unabashed Adam Lambert fan, and author of YA urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. Up till now, I’ve written THIN AIR, the first in a planned four-part series about elementals (a.k.a. nature spirits associated with each of the four elements). If you’re a fan of fae, piercings, and tattoos, look no further—THIN AIR is your kind of book. Heavy on the romance, light on the gore, with just the right touch of whimsy—and a serial killer or two thrown in to liven things up.
Sure, there are a ton of faery books out there, and a lot of them are terrific. But THIN AIR is different. How many novels have you read that feature sylphs (air spirits), salamanders (fire spirits), gnomes (earth spirits) and undines (water spirits), many of whom have crossed over into the mortal realm to live undetected in human society? Not even one? I’m not surprised. THIN AIR offers a glimpse into a unique and richly defined mythological world largely overlooked by fantasy authors. Until now, that is.
So, we’ve covered the “fantasy” aspect of THIN AIR, but what about the “urban” part? That’s easy. THIN AIR is set in New York City’s amazing Greenwich Village, home of New York University. Virtually all of the locales mentioned in the book are based on actual places in the Village, and around the city and NYU campus. You can’t get more urban than that!

An Excerpt

“I’m sorry.” I debated whether or not to tell Shane and Dante about my “secret admirer”. But what could I say? If I told them I suspected I was being followed, they would want to know more. More than I could reveal. “I guess I’m just a little distracted this evening.” I glanced at the stranger again, and then I saw it.

He smiled at me.

The smug, self-satisfied smile of a hunter who had cornered his prey. If there was one thing I’d learned from my experience with Delilah, it was this: Monsters must be dealt with. It was foolishly naive to think they could be evaded or ignored, especially when they were this close.

“Excuse me,” I said to Dante and Shane. “I’ll be right back.”

I slid off the stool and started to walk down the length of the bar.

“Alice, the ladies’ room is the other way!” Dante called after me—but that’s not where I was headed.

I noticed the stranger’s body stiffen, his head turning almost imperceptibly as he followed my movements.

I wasn’t sure what I’d do when I confronted him. I’d let my instincts kick in. Trust that my inner voice would guide my actions. My heart pounded, and I knew my cheeks must be flushed. My hands gradually knotted into fists as I drew closer to him. He was watching me now, not even trying to pretend he wasn’t. I wove through the patrons packed three deep at the bar, never taking my eyes off of him. But when I tried to pass a tall man in a bandana holding a mug of beer, my path was blocked.

“Hey, blondie. Can I buy you a drink?” He was slightly drunk or high—or both. His glazed eyes slid down the length of my body, lingering on my breasts, before finding their way back to my face again.

“No, thank you,” I replied, in a firm voice.

“Aw, c’mon. Ain’t I good-looking enough for you?”

The stranger was watching me. Watching us. Even behind the sunglasses, the change in his expression was unmistakable—the slight twist of his lips in disgust; the sudden rush of blood to his cheeks. I could only imagine what his eyes must have looked like behind those glasses, simmering with rage. His body shifted forward, as though he were poised to leap off his stool.

“I said, ‘no’.” I steeled my tone and managed to slip past the man with the beer. The stranger smiled slightly, one eyebrow elevated in admiration, and resettled himself. He was waiting for me; I was sure of it. Though he appeared to contemplate his drink, the determined set of his shoulders, the way he idly swirled the ice in his glass, told me he was preparing himself for a confrontation.

I was ready, too.

Friendly Fire
by Lynn Seresin
Though their love remains strong, the pressure of constant danger has taken its toll on Alice and Daniel’s relationship. Paralda’s assassins continue their murder spree in New York City, targeting girls who resemble Alice in an effort to fulfill the air king’s deadly directive. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, the couple must also fiercely guard the secret of Alice’s emergent powers and true identity from everyone--including their closest friends--to protect her safety.
Enter Ash and Terrance: two former elementals, each with their own set of reasons for transmuting to the human plane. For Ash, the material realm represents freedom and the possibility of fulfilling a forbidden wish. Terrance has only one aim in the mortal world: to win Alice’s heart. And it seems he’ll stop at nothing to achieve his goal.
