[Day Nine of 31 Days] Thin Air Prize Pack Giveaway + Guest Post: Lynn Seresin, author of Thin Air

Today's guest is one of the nicest authors I have met. She's actually the first one to know about this fae event. I wasn't sure if I should push through with the idea in my head, and so I asked her what she thinks. She liked the idea, and so 31 Days of Fairy was born. Thank you Lynn, for encouraging me. It's amazing what little words of encouragement can do no?

Anyhoo... Lynn has visited my blog several times already, but today is very special. Lynn, through Alice (the main character in her book Thin Air, will talk about FAIRIES IN LOVE.

Giveaways!? Yes, we have that too! Lynn will be giving away Thin Air Prize Pack consisting of an eBook of Thin Air and Thin Air Swag!

Lynn worked as a children's book editor and freelance writer of middle-grade fiction before writing Thin Air, the first book in the Thin Air saga.

Fairies in love (from Alice’s POV)

I didn’t set out to fall in love with a human. It just happened, almost without my realizing it. I saw Daniel by the lake and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. He was the most beautiful being I’d ever seen—human or elemental. No sylph, however handsome, could even begin to compare.

I kept watching him, not just for the sheer pleasure of admiring his outward form, but because something about him captivated me. Humans call it love at first sight—an inexplicable connection that the heart alone can understand. I only knew that everything about Daniel was wonderful—and I wanted more. I wanted to truly get to know him, to speak with him and hear his thoughts, to share his interests. I wanted to learn everything about him, but how could I, when I was only the air around him? He couldn’t see me, touch me. I was nothing to him, invisible. And there was Delilah, his girlfriend. I’d never envied a human before, but I couldn’t bring myself to even look at her as she and Daniel splashed and played in the lake. And yet, I couldn’t look away, either. Though it shames me to admit it, I even spied on them when they were making love in their tent. I slipped between them so I could fool myself into thinking that it was me Daniel held in his arms instead of her. I know it was a foolish thing to do, but I couldn’t help myself.

And then I learned of Gob’s power. Gob, king of the gnomes, ruler of the earthly element, who had the magic to make a body of flesh and bone. How excited I was! I scarcely considered I would have to leave everything and everyone I knew behind for an earthbound life. Even my wings, and the power of flight—I would lose all connection with the air. That I would incur the wrath of my king for even considering transmuting to the human plane didn’t deter me. Breaking his laws carried a heavy penalty; but to be human—nothing mattered more.

I only realized how different the ethereal world was from the mortal one when I formerly entered it. So much to learn! Even the workings of my human body—its noises, pangs, and multitude of sensations—left me confused much of the time. Hunger and thirst do not exist for elementals. Neither does pain, sickness, or aging. My body would know these things now. Slowly, inexorably, I would begin to grow old and die.

But I would do it all again, now that I’m joined with Daniel. Now that I can see him, touch him, and know that he can see and touch me, all that I endured—and still endure—is worthwhile. We belong together, bound by love to travel the same path toward eternity. Leaving my ethereal existence behind was a small price to pay for a lifetime of human happiness.

Thin Air
by Lynn Seresin
Alice Ayre is no ordinary teenager. She took her first name from a statue in Central Park, pulled her last name out of the air (literally), and she’s actually almost a thousand years old. In fact, the only “ordinary” thing about Alice is that she’s in love.
Alice was a sylphid—a winged air spirit—when she spotted Daniel Field camping in the Adirondacks and lost her heart to the handsome NYU student. Intangible to the human senses, her only hope of winning his heart resides in becoming mortal, even though transmutation is forbidden by Paralda, ruler of the air. Risking punishment, however, seems a small price to pay for a chance at true happiness.
Tracking down Daniel in New York City ends up being surprisingly easy. Getting noticed by him for all the right reasons is another story, especially when the human world keeps tossing challenges in Alice’s path. Just when she’s mastered zippers and buttons, she catches herself dropping a sugar packet into her coffee and mistaking a photo of John Lennon for one of Daniel’s relatives. Her eccentricities raise the occasional eyebrow with Daniel and his friends, but her quirky charm, sweetness, and sincerity win out. Before long, she lands a job, begins a relationship with Daniel, and starts settling into her new life—until her past comes after her.
Enraged over Alice’s departure, Paralda has sent transmuted assassins to pursue her into the human world. A near-fatal fire on a camping trip and the murder of a look-alike employee at the club where Alice works convince her they are closing in fast. Alone with her secret–who would believe her?—Alice must elude a nameless, faceless enemy sworn to destroy the happy, new life she’s risked so much to achieve.
