Book Recap: Fracture by Megan Miranda

Cover Inspection:
I do believe that the cover fits the story very well.
The girl in the cover seemed to be looking at a frozen lake.
This is what actually happens in the story,
where Delaney ponders on what it means to actually live.

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):
Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal.

LOCATION/SETTING:
Moden day. Winter in Maine.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
The story is narrated by Delaney. She is very smart. A bit on the nerdish side, but is friends with the popular crowd.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
Delaney fell in a frozen lake. She was there for eleven minutes before Decker, her best friend, was able to retrieve her. She was in a coma for a week. Everyone expected her to die. But out of the blue, she woke up feeling normal. Or so she thought. Apparently, Delaney developed powers that allow her to sense an impending death. Then she meets Troy. Troy was also in a coma, and like Delaney, he also has the ability to sense death.

LOVE:
I love the easy friendship between Decker and Delaney. Everything is comfortable. They are not afraid to act silly, stupid and mean around the other. That is, until hormones got in the way and ruined it all. I must say that their connection is not as strong as Jay and Violet's (from The Body Finder), but the reader would still feel that they still have that "special something." There is also a scene in this book that I loved very much - when everyone left, and Delaney had to face things alone. It's just so heartbreaking and powerful. I really felt what Delaney was feeling - alone. It's very beautiful and sad.

NO LOVE:
There were a lot of moments in the story where Delaney acted like she doesn't know what she wants. At one point in the book, I even thought that Delaney is leading Decker on. Poor Decker. I think he is just waiting for Delaney to realize that they are meant to be together. This annoyed me a bit, but I think it's a pretty realistic reaction for a normal teenager, but they just don't know how to handle the changes. Plus, I don't get Delaney's attraction with Troy. True, they have something in common, but Troy acts like a lunatic at times - he's both homicidal and suicidal. Troy is creepy, and Delaney should stay away from him.

FAVORITE CHARACTER:
I liked every character in this story. Every single one of them. And this is because all the characters are REAL. They all made mistakes in the story. They have insecurities, deficiencies, and faults. The characters in this book are HUMAN. The love interest/s in this book is/are so flawed, and they are in complete contrast with the other YA love interests, who are portrayed as perfect.

FAVORITE LINE:
I hadn't known that a light could be a feeling and a sound could be a color and a kiss could be both a question and an answer.
MUSINGS:
While reading the book, I actually didn't know where the story was headed. But it was so full of suspense (this is a good thing) that I didn't care, and I just let the author take me where she wants me to be. This book is a very good combination of everything. It's part suspense, part psychological thriller, part drama, part romance, part paranormal. I have no problems with with regard to the writing. In fact, I think it was good. But what I liked most about the writing is the way Megan Miranda played with opposites throughout the book. Basically, Fracture is a book of beautiful opposites:
  • Heaven vs Hell
  • Life vs Death
  • Living vs Dying
  • Possible vs Impossible
  • Saying vs Not Saying
  • Question vs Answer
One would have to read the book in order to know what I mean. This actually made the book more interesting. Aside from that, Fracture tells a story of what it means to be human. I would say that this is the philosophical part of it. It is not the body that makes a person human. To be human is to make mistakes, learning from it, and getting second chances at life and love.
