Author Interview: Kathleen Peacock, author of Hemlock

Today's guest is Kathleen Peacock, author of the newly released shifter / mystery story Hemlock. I had a chance to read an advance copy of this wonderful, wonderful book. It was such a pleasure to read. I cannot wait for the second installment. Read my review of all praises HERE.

About Kathleen

Kathleen spent most of her teen years writing short stories. She put her writing dreams on hold while attending college but rediscovered them when office life started leaving her with an allergy to cubicles.

Do you wish on stars?
Not really. I do, however, sometimes leave a penny on the sidewalk in the hope that someone else will find it and have a lucky day.

Is there a book on your bookshelf that you are embarrassed about? Tell us about it.
I don’t really believe any book should be considered a “guilty pleasure” as long as it’s something you enjoy reading. The only books I’m really embarrassed about are the ones that have languished on my TBR pile for years—and that’s because I feel as though I’ve somehow failed them. Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine and All Over Coffee by Paul Madonna are tied for the longest amount of time in the pile (both at around 4 years).

Choose one: the one who loves you or the one you love. Why?
I’ve been on both sides and neither is terribly fun. To quote Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic: “Unrequited love is so boring. Weeping under a blue-black sky is for suckers or maniacs.” (And I quote that as someone who has sat weeping under the blue-black sky and who will—probably—find herself on each side of the divide again.)

Hemlock is a very nice combination of a werewolf story and a mystery/detective story. What is your favorite werewolf book? Favorite mystery/detective book?
Thank you! I don’t actually read a lot of werewolf books—especially in YA—because I’m terribly self-conscious. Once the last Hemlock book is finished, I’m going to run out and just gorge myself on all the great YA titles I haven’t let myself read. Though not YA, I did finally read the first couple of books in the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and loved them. I haven’t had time to read the whole series, but I really liked the pack dynamics and how Mercy was a part of that world but still separate. It’s not a detective story, but I really love Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. It’s a non-fiction book about an infamous murder in Savannah, Georgia.

What is your next project?
Hemlock is the first book in a trilogy, so that’s going to keep me busy for the next little bit.

Thank you so much Kathleen!

About the Book

Hemlock
(Hemlock #1)
by Kathleen Peacock
Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.
Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.
Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.
Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.
Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.
