Book Recap: Fated by Sarah Alderson

Cover Inspection:
I honestly think that the cover does not fit the story.
The cover has a murder mystery vibe.
This book is definitely not that.

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):
What happens when you discover you aren't who you thought you were? And that the person you love is the person who will betray you? If your fate is already determined, can you fight it?
When Evie Tremain discovers that she’s the last in a long line of Demon slayers and that she’s being hunted by an elite band of assassins –Shapeshifters, Vampires and Mixen demons amongst them – she knows she can’t run. They’ll find her wherever she goes. Instead she must learn to stand and fight.
But when the half-human, half-Shadow Warrior Lucas Gray - is sent to spy on Evie and then ordered to kill her before she can fulfil a dangerous prophecy, their fates become inextricably linked. The war that has raged for one thousand years between humans and demons is about to reach a devastating and inevitable conclusion. Either one or both of them will die before this war ends.
If your life becomes bound to another’s, what will it take to sever it?

LOCATION/SETTING:
The story is set in modern day California.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
The main character is Evie Tremain. She's moody and filled with angst. She's angry at everyone and everything. She is also the last of the demon slayers. Not only that, she happens to be a direct descendant of powerful slayers, which makes her extremely powerful.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
The plot is fairly simple. Evie is a descendant of a demon slayer. Lucas is some sort of demon (a strong kind), and was tasked to kill Evie. And guess what? They fall in love.

LOVE:
This book is written in the third person, which is actually refreshing. The young adult genre is just saturated with books written in the first person. The only problem I have with books written in the third person is that it lacks the narrator's perspective and feelings. But Sarah Alderson managed to embed emotions and thoughts that her characters are feeling and thinking. Fated also has a great background story. It helped me understand the characters better. I also loved the fact that there are different creatures/species in the story. It made the story all the more interesting. Also, this book has great fighting scenes. It not only focused on Lucas and Evie's romance, it has very entertaining action scenes as well. Last, but not the least, I adored the last chapter. The exchange between Lucas and Evie is just... heart melting. VERY romantic. To prove just how romantic this book is, read my favorite line.

FAVORITE LINE:
‘Because I love you. Even then I think. Not because you’re beautiful and wear crazy ball gowns to kill Unhumans, not because your cheerleading moves make for an interesting fight scene, not because you’ll jump into frozen water to hunt for a ring, nor because you’re the White Light.’
She couldn’t help herself. She groaned.
He kept talking, brushing over her protest. ‘I love you, Evie, because you make me a better person. For the first time in my life I’m fighting for something other than revenge.’
NO LOVE:
While I think it's great that there are a lot of different creatures in the world that was created, I did not like the fact that they were not introduced gradually. The reader will be bombarded with all kinds of creatures from hell at the same time at the beginning of the story. With this, I was not able to get to know the characters as well as I wanted to.

FAVORITE CHARACTER:
Lucas and Evie! They are practically oozing with love and romance. Resisting each other is an exercise in futility.

MUSINGS:
I am a sucker for star crossed romances - those romances that are doomed from the start. That is the kind of romance this book has - "we shouldn't, but we can't help but..." kind of love. If you're into that kind of romance, then this book is for you. The forbidden love element in this book is mind-blowing. I have read a lot of forbidden romances, but this is actually one of the better ones out there. The chemistry and attraction between Lucas and Evie is just undeniable, and it makes me sad that they have to kill each other. But that is what makes this story so romantic. I especially loved Lucas's declaration of love near the end of the book. The story, however, is predictable. Nevertheless, it's still very entertaining - a pleasure to read.
