Book Recap: Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult & Samantha van Leer

Cover Inspection:
I honestly think that this cover does not fit the story at all,
except for that wand the girl is holding.

SUMMARY (book description based on GoodReads):

What happens when happily ever after…isn’t?

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale.

LOCATION/SETTING:
The story is set in the modern day and... inside a book.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
The main character is 15 year old Delilah. She is somewhat of a loner as prefers the company of her books than other kids. Prince Oliver is a character from a fairy tale book that Delilah loves to read. He is "alive" and dreams of escaping his fairy tale story, and live a "real life."

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:
Delilah finds that the characters in her favorite fairy tale are actually alive! She helps the prince get out of the book, and have his own version of happily ever after.

LOVE:
I think that the story is very original. The premise - fairy tale characters leaping out of the pages, is unique. I have never read anything like it. The characters may be likened to stage actors who have lives of their own when not acting out their parts in the book. Plus, I did like how the story was narrated - alternatively by the Prince Oliver and by Delilah. And a third person narrates Prince Oliver's fairy tale. The chapters by the Prince takes place inside the book itself, when the book is closed or not being read. The chapters by Delilah takes place in the real world.

Because this is fairy tale in every sense of the word, I was expecting instalove. I was pleasantly surprised, however, that there is none! Sure, there was instant attraction as Delilah thought the Prince was handsome, and the Prince thought Delilah was beautiful. But the two actually started out as friends first, pouring out their heartaches and pains to each other. This eventually developed into a very sweet, very tender fairy tale romance.

It is important to note that this is a full length novel, but the book is peppered with illustrations all over the book. It actually made the book more attractive.

Not only is this book about fairy tale romances, but this book may also qualify as fantasy. There are dragons, mer folk, pirates, and talking animals.

NO LOVE:
The storyline is fairly childish. It has a disney quality to it - blurring the boundries between real and make believe. But i think its part of its charm.

FAVORITE CHARACTERS:
Yes, this book has the ability to kill a person with its CUTENESS, but in all honesty, I didn't really connect with the characters.

FAVORITE LINE:
There were "words of wisdom" throughout the book, but nothing really struck me.

MUSINGS:
Between The Lines is cute and fun. It is recommended for younger readers as it is clean and wholesome. The writing is also very simple. It's written by a teen (with the assistance of her mother) for teens. It's pretty easy to get into. This is actually very similar to the movie Enchanted - princes and fairy tales, although without the singing and minus McDreamy (hah!). If you enjoyed watching Enchanted then you will most likely enjoy this story. On the other hand, if you thought Enchanted was corny and fluffy and all things you hate, then don't read this. Would the older YA / adult audience enjoy this? Some would. Some won't. The book played around with the concept of "fairy tale", and it might seem too childish for some older readers. But then again, this book is good for revisiting childhood heroes and fantasies. Between The Lines is a very quick read. It is a very light, very cute, very fluffy book that may be read on a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon.
